Praise you in this storm

"Praise You In This Storm"
I was sure by now
God You would have reached down
And wiped our tears away
Stepped in and saved the day
But once again, I say "Amen", and it's still raining
As the thunder rolls
I barely hear Your whisper through the rain
"I'm with you"
And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away
[Chorus:]
And I'll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
For You are who You are
No matter where I am
And every tear I've cried
You hold in Your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm
I remember when
I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry to you
And you raised me up again
My strength is almost gone
How can I carry on
If I can't find You
But as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain
"I'm with you"
And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away
[Chorus]
I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
The Maker of Heaven and Earth
[Chorus x2]

Reason why we need to Trust in God

Trusting in God: Part #1:
Scripture Reference: Proverbs 3: 1-8
’My son, forget not My law, but let thine heart keep My commandments, for length of
days and long life, and peace shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth
forsake thee, Bind them upon thy neck, write them upon the table of thine heart. So
shall thou find favor and good understanding in the
Lord. TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL THINE HEART
AND LEAN NOT UNTO THINE OWN UNDERSTANDING.
IN ALL THY WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM AND HE
SHALL DIRECT THY PATHS. Be not wise in thine own
eyes, fear the LORD and depart from evil. It shall be
health to thy navel and marrow to thy bones."

Each One of Us Place Our TRUST ---Our Confidence
-- Our Hope --- Our Assurance In Someone or
Something.
There is Something We Feel Secure and Safe In.
Perhaps It May Be Your Job --- Your Spouse ---
Your Family --- Your Education --- Your Church.
However,
Are you SECURE ENOUGH that it will HOLD YOU
WHEN THE HOWLING WINDS OF ADVERSITY ARE
COMING AT YOU FULL FORCE? WHEN THE GROUND
YOU HAVE STOOD UPON BEGINS TO TREMBLE AND
QUIVER AND SHAKE UNDERNEATH YOUR FEET --
WILL YOU STAY ANCHORED?" Things May Be Fairing
Pretty Good For You At This Moment But I Assure
You There Will Come a Time and it May Not Be Very
Long, When The Storms of Life Will Come Blowing In
Against You With Full Force ---- WHAT WILL CARRY
YOU THROUGH THEN? It’s Hard to WAIT Until the
STORMS COME and Then Go Out and Try to Find
Something to Anchor Upon or a SECURITY You Can
TRUST in. The 3 Hebrew Children were anchored
before they went into the fiery furnace. The 4th
man in the raging fire was no stranger to them. They
were TRUSTING in Him before they were cast into the flames.
<>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <><
WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU TRUST IN? UPON?
HOW SECURE IS IT?
The Word of God forcasts some TROUBLESOME TIMES between now and the return of
Jesus for His Bride. Are you trusting wholeheartedly in Jesus -- The Solid Rock?
In Times Like These You Need a Saviour
In Times Like These You Need an Anchor
Be Very Sure, Be Very Sure
Your Anchor Holds and Grips the Solid Rock
This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One
This Rock is Jesus, The Only One
Be Very Sure, BeVery Sure
Your Anchor Holds and Grips the Solid Rock
-----------------------------------------------------
IN THE 19TH CENTURY --- THERE WAS A VERY FAMOUS ACROBAT KNOWN FOR HIS
TIGHTROPE SKILLS. 160 FEET ABOVE THE NIAGARA FALLS --- ON A ROPE --- A
ROYAL PARTY FROM BRITAIN OBSERVED THE ACROBAT AS HE WENT ACROSS THE
TIGHTROPE ON STILTS. THEN THEY WATCHED HIM AS HE WENT ACROSS
BLINDFOLDED. AFTER THAT, HE WENT ACROSS AND STOPPED HALF WAY AND
COOKED AN OMELET. NEXT, HE WHEELED A WHEELBARROW FROM ONE SIDE TO THE
OTHER AND THEN HE RETURNED WITH A SACK OF POTATOES IN THE
WHEELBARROW.
THEN THE ACROBAT APPROACHED THE ROYAL PARTY AND HE ASKED THE DUKE OF
NEWCASTLE, "DO YOU BELIEVE I COULD TAKE A MAN ACROSS THIS TIGHTROPE IN
THIS WHEELBARROW?"
"YES, I DO." ANSWERED THE DUKE. "WELL, HOP IN." REPLIED THE ACROBAT.
HOWEVER THE DUKE DECLINED THE INVITATION. YOU SEE HE BELIEVED THE
ACROBAT "COULD" BUT HE WASN’T ABLE TO "TRUST" HIM WITH HIS OWN LIFE.
AND THAT IS THE WAY IT IS WITH SO MANY PEOPLE TODAY, EVEN SO MANY
PROFESSING CHRISTIANS,

A call to commitment

Sermon:
A Call to Commitment
Romans 12:1-2
I want to introduce you to a mythical church member that I am going to call Kenny.
When we first meet Kenny he is attending services at First Church but he left
because the services were too formal, every one on the platform wore a tie. He and
his family then wandered over to Grace Church because they had a great choir. But
before long, we hear they are “happy” at the
Christian Worship Center. But before long they move
their membership to the Community Church because
of the great bible teaching. After that the youth
program at New Hope catches their eye. Now at least
for the moment, they are at the church uptown, at
least until something else catching their roving eye.
What ever happened to commitment?
Why do you suppose that there are close to 100
million church members in America yet they are not
making more of a moral and spiritual impact? Why is
that on Sunday morning thousands of churches have
more empty pews than full? Why is it that the
average Sunday School in America has less than 66 in
attendance and that the average worship service has
84? Why is it that only 50% of the number on any
church membership roll can be expected to attend?
If Christians really believe in a real heaven and a
real Hell, how can we be so silent? . . . The answer to
all of these questions is tragically simple! God’s
people have made a decision about Jesus….but have
never made a commitment to Him.” [Charles Stanley.
Confronting Casual Christianity. (Nashville: Broadman
Press, 1985) pp. 23-33.]
There is of course a difference between a decision
and a commitment. Perhaps this cannot be seen any
clearer than it is in the failure rate of marriages in
America. According to statistics at least 50% of all
marriages will end in divorce. Why do you suppose
that is happening? Charles Stanley in his book,
Confronting Casual Christianity, says that it is
because these couples made a decision but did not
make a commitment. Every person who married made a decision! They stood before a
preacher and made promises and recited vows. They made a decision, they kissed each
other and walked out together to live but not necessarily “happily ever after” and
not necessarily together. So why did they divorce? The answer is that they made a
decision, but they did not truly commit their lives to each other. But when a couple
marries and makes a commitment to one another that is a different story. (Stanley.
pp. 25-27)
The same is true in the church. The reason that the church is not making more of an
impact in our society is that many church members made a decision about Christ, but
have not made a commitment to Christ.
When the pilot of a giant airline is speeding down the runway, there is a certain point
where it staying on the ground is no longer an option. When he crosses that line, he is
committed to the air, he will take off or a disastrous crash is imminent. At the pilot
the pilot can no longer change his mind he is committed.
Unfortunately churches are filled with members who have never got off the ground.
They have been sitting there gunning their engines, making noise but getting
nowhere. They have been planning on it, meaning to, wanting to, trying to, going to,
aiming to, hoping to. But tragedy of tragedies, they have never got off the ground.

Prepared for good works

Prepared for Good Works
Text: Titus 3:3-8
Proposition: The Christian must be ready at all times to do good works.
While serving in the Persian Gulf, our entire battalion discovered that we were
unprepared because of deficient gas masks. I believe that many believers are like
that, unprepared for the calling at hand. Rather
than being ready at any moment to do good, we are
absorbed with our own agendas and miss out on divine
opportunities. The Christian must prepare himself to
be ready to live a life of good works.
How do we prepare ourselves to do good works? If I
were the Apostle Paul I would have immediately listed
a number of practical things to do, like free up your
time, set aside money , volunteer for a ministry. But
instead of doing this Paul goes a level deeper and
reflects on the inner components that must combine
to make a person prepared for good works. These
three attitudes, if you will, are the soil out of which
a prepared life grows.
1. The Christian never forgets the life from which
he/she has been rescued.
Explanation: Paul reflects on life before Christ, and
says that in that condition we were “objects of God’s
wrath” (see Ephesians 2:1-3). Not only were we
unprepared to do genuine good works but we were
predisposed to do evil works. In our fallen state, our
entire life is oriented around self so that we
generate not good works but selfish works. This is not
to say that as unbelievers we were as evil as we could
be, but it does mean that self was the center of life
and not the things of God. As Tim Keller has said
“Not many of us are Attila the Hun or Adolph Hitler,
but it’s not for lack of potential.”
It is from this life that we have been rescued.
Therefore, we must always look back on our previous life with gratitude and humility
that we have been saved from it, knowing that but by the grace of God we would still
be living in our own selfish worlds bound for hell. We have been rescued from disaster.
And so it is that this knowledge of our past makes us painfully aware of those still
left behind and needing rescued. We make ourselves prepared by always remembering
where we came from.
Illustration: Some of the most poignant pictures of the World Trade Center tragedy
were those that showed people covered with soot that had escaped just in time. Many
of them looked back upon the others that were left behind and actually felt guilty
that they had been spared and not the others. And many of them that were able
were the first to wander back and look for survivors. Those that escaped the
collapsing buildings could never look upon those left behind with any sense of
superiority or condescension. But by the grace of God they too would have been
crushed. Instead they wanted to go back and help save them. Their own rescue or
escape made them utterly willing and desirous to help others.
Application: We must always live with a humble acknowledgment that we too have been
rescued. And therefore, with dust still on our souls so to speak we look back for any
that we can help. We are prepared because we have been rescued and are keenly
aware of those that have not escaped yet. And obviously we have no ground for pride,
arrogance, prejudice or aloofness, rudeness or unsociableness. Instead, we remember
our original state and identify with sinners as those that have been

Following your dream

Sermon:
INTRO: Recently I was asked to do a Youth service on a Wed night at our Church.
Since I am 74 years old, it was a little intimidating
But the end results: 20 youth responded to the Altar Call for salvation.
Our Text for this service:
POWER POINT 2 EPH 3:20
"Now to him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that you can ask or
think according to the power that works within
you." (Ephesians 3:20)
Introduction
The subject for this service tonight is for You to
reach your full potential, be all you can be, and
follow your Dreams.
Someone once said.
Your skin is not paper, don’t cut it.
Your face isn’t a mask, don’t cover it.
Your size isn’t a book, don’t judge it.
Your life isn’t a film, don’t end it! (Author Unknown)
Every day we face an enemy whose sole purpose in
life is to keep you tied down with the pleasures the
World has to offer. His goal is to separate you from
the Church, your faith, your walk with Christ.
I came here tonight to tell you if you will reach out
to God and make him a major player in your life, he
will help you reach your potential and follow your
dreams"
If we are to reach our full potential, The first thing
we need to do is to examine our self:
Are you satisfied w/ your Christian life the way it is
today?
POWER POINT 3 Facing the Giants
 Have you faced the giants in your life?
We all have giants we have to face in our Lives. As God was with David when he faced
the giant in 1 Samuel 17, he will be with you today as you face your Goliath’s.
Note: (The following Illustration was taken from a sermon by Duran Johnson here on
Sermon Central).

Several years ago a team of marine biologists did a study on the life and behavior
and a great white shark.
In their research, the marine biologists reported that great whites, in their natural
habitat, have the potential of reaching 3500 pounds and 20 feet in length (now,
that’s the biggest one they’ve seen).
Now, here is the interesting thing they discovered during their study. They
discovered what happened when a great white shark was raised from a baby in a small
aquarium. What they discovered was mind -blowing.
They discovered that even though a great white shark has the God-given capacity to
grow up to 20 ft in length and weigh up to 3500 lbs. - when confined to a small
aquarium, it would only reach 12 to 15 inches in length and only weigh 15-20 lbs. They
discovered even though it would have reached full chronological maturity (as far as
age is concerned), it would be well short of reaching its full potential otherwise.
The shark was a prisoner of his Mind and his perception.
Tonight my question to you Young people,
 Who are you?
 Where are you going in Life?
 And how are you going to get there.
 Do you have a plan for your life?
POWER POINT 5 Mice
The choice is yours, you can just follow the crowd and be one of the Pack like the
laboratory mice in this slide or you can break out of the mold and follow your
dreams.
Philippians 4:13 Puts it this way
For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who
love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Conclusion
So, don’t be afraid to follow your goals, your Dreams,

11 Things We Can Learn from Romans 8:26-39 Read Romans 8:26-39. Now, let’s walk through this passage, verse by verse, and really think about what God is saying in His Word. Remember: the Bible is absolute Truth. We simply have to take God at His Word to practically experience the promises He gives us. 1. The Holy Spirit strengthens us in our weakness. Verse 26 says, So too the [Holy] Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness…. We all have weaknesses, and when we come to God for help, the Holy Spirit, who is always with us, will come to our aid and give us His strength when we are weak. 2. The Holy Spirit teaches us to pray accurately. The second half of verse 26 says, For we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance. At times we wonder if God hears our prayers and we feel like we’re just not doing it right—saying the right things or praying long enough. It’s true that in ourselves, we’re not worthy to come before God and we don’t know how to pray worthily. But this verse clearly shows us that when the Holy Spirit lives in us, through our faith in Christ, He hears our prayers and helps us to express them to God. 3. The Holy Spirit prays perfect prayers for and through us. With Christ in our hearts and the presence of the Holy Spirit always with us, we have God’s help in everything we do—even prayer! Romans 8:27 says, And He Who searches the hearts of men knows what is in the mind of the [Holy] Spirit [what His intent is], because the Spirit intercedes and pleads [before God] in behalf of the saints according to and in harmony with God’s will. The Holy Spirit knows what’s in our hearts and He knows the perfect will of God. When He prays through us, His prayers are according to and in harmony with God’s will. 4. All things work together for my good as I pray, love God, and want His will. Do these three things—pray, love God, and want His will—and everything in your life can work together for your good. Verse 28 says, We are assured and know that [God being a partner in their labor] all things work together and are [ftting into a plan] for good to and for those who love God and are called according to [His] design and purpose. We have the assurance that when we go through hard things—hurts, disappoint- ment and discouragement—God is with us and He can cause all things to work together for our good. 5. We are destined to be molded—transformed and changed—into the very image of Jesus Christ. What an amazing truth this is! Check it out in verse 29: For those whom He foreknew [of whom He was aware and loved beforehand], He also destined from the beginning [foreordaining them] to be molded into the image of His Son [and share inwardly His likeness], that He might become the frstborn among many brethren. God loves you and His destiny for you is to mold you into the image of Jesus so you can share inwardly His likeness. You can be like Jesus—from the inside out! 6. God is for us! Romans 8:31 gives us another astounding promise: What then shall we say to [all] this? If God is for us, who [can be] against us? [Who can be our foe, if God is on our side?] Is anyone or anything greater than God? Of course not! So, if God loves us and is for us, who can keep us from living in victory in Christ? 7. God provides EVERYTHING we need. It’s true. See for yourself in verse 32: He who did not withhold or spare [even] His own Son but gave Him up for us all, will He not also with Him freely and graciously give us all [other] thing Because of His great love for us, God gave His best—His only Son. And that is just the beginning of everything He has for us. We can trust that He will freely and gra- ciously give us all other things. 8. Condemnation is not from God. This is one of the most amazing miracles of having new life in Christ: all of our sins are forgiven and we are free from guilt and condemnation. Verses 33 and 34 confrm it: Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect [when it is] God Who justifes [that is, Who puts us in right relation to Himself? Who shall come forward and accuse or impeach those whom God has chosen? Will God, Who acquits us?] Who is there to condemn [us]? Will Christ Jesus (the Messiah), Who died, or rather Who was raised from the dead, Who is at the right hand of God actually pleading as He intercedes for us? We need the Holy Spirit to convict us of our sin so we can ask God for forgiveness, repent and then receive His forgiveness. But we should not live in condemnation, because God justifes us and puts us in right relation to Himself through our faith in Jesus. So when the enemy says, “You’re guilty!” respond to him, saying, “No! I’m officially forgiven and acquitted by God Himself!” 9. Nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Nothing literally means NOTHING. Verse 35 is living proof: Who shall ever separate us from Christ’s love? Shall suffering and affliction and tribulation? Or calamity and distress? Or persecution or hunger or destitution or peril or sword? God loves you! He desires to have an intimate relationship with you, and when life is hard, He’s always with you and will bring you through it all, no matter what the challenge or suffering may be. 10. We are more than conquerors through Christ who loves us! The words “more than” are so exciting here. We don’t just barely survive or get by in this life. As believers in Christ, verses 36 and 37 tell us: Even as it is written, For Thy sake we are put to death all the day long; we are regarded and counted as sheep for the slaughter.Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us.11. Be deeply rooted in the love of God. This is the key to it all. Let verses 38 and 39 fully convince you: For I am persuaded beyond doubt (am sure) that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things impending and threatening nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to sepa- rate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. The love of God is unconditional, constant and greater than anything else—death, life, angels, principalities, things impending and threatening, powers, height, depth—that exists! Remember each day that God loves you and nothing can sepa- rate you from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What the Bible teaches about Gifts

James 1:17 ESV / 46 helpful votes Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Ephesians 2:8 ESV / 26 helpful votes For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, Romans 6:23 ESV / 18 helpful votes For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. John 3:16 ESV / 16 helpful votes “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Galatians 2:20 ESV / 15 helpful votes I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Romans 12:6 ESV / 14 helpful votes Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; Matthew 6:1-34 ESV / 13 helpful votes “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. John 8:51 ESV / 9 helpful votes Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” Ecclesiastes 3:13 ESV / 9 helpful votes Also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man. Romans 8:38-39 ESV / 8 helpful votes For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Acts 2:38 ESV / 8 helpful votes And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Romans 5:15-18 ESV / 7 helpful votes But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 2 Timothy 1:5-14 ESV / 6 helpful votes I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, Colossians 3:21 ESV / 4 helpful votes Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. 2 Corinthians 3:6 ESV / 4 helpful votes Who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 1 Corinthians 12:27 ESV / 4 helpful votes Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. Romans 11:1-36 ESV / 4 helpful votes I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” But what is God's reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. Romans 3:23 ESV / 4 helpful votes For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Mark 1:1-45 ESV / 4 helpful votes The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Malachi 3:17 ESV / 4 helpful votes “They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. Song of Solomon 1:1-17 ESV / 4 helpful votes The Song of Songs, which is Solomon's. Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine; your anointing oils are fragrant; your name is oil poured out; therefore virgins love you. Draw me after you; let us run. The king has brought me into his chambers. We will exult and rejoice in you; we will extol your love more than wine; rightly do they love you. I am very dark, but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon. Psalm 119:1-176 ESV / 4 helpful votes Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! 1 Corinthians 12:27-30 ESV / 3 helpful votes Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? Isaiah 51:6 ESV / 2 helpful votes Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner; but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will never be dismayed.

Overcoming Sin

JESUS DIED so that you may , LIVE YOUR LIFE FREE FROM SIN Is it possible for us as Christians to live our lives completely free from sin? I know that we have all sinned at one time or another in our lifetime. The Bible makes it perfectly clear that ALL have fallen short of the glory of God, but what I want to assure every believer is that: "It IS possible, after we have accepted Jesus as our personal Savior, to live our lives totally and completely free from any and all sin!" Everyone may have his or her own opinion on this subject. However, I am not interested in opinions. I am only interested in what the Bible has to say . Jesus said in Mark 9:23, "If you can believe, ALL things ARE possible to him that believes." First let’s qualify what is meant by the phrase “all things”. I think that it would be safe to assume that most Christians would agree that anything that is God’s "WILL" could be placed in the category of “all things”. Therefore, if it is God’s WILL for us to stop sinning, then it would seem logical to put the phrase “living your life free from sin” in place of the phrase “all things”. After making the substitution, this is how the scripture now reads, “If you can believe, then living your life free from sin IS possible to him that BELIEVES." For some Christians this one scripture would be enough biblical evidence to start living a sin free life, and that would be great. However, using only scripture does not give us an adequate foundation for sound Biblical doctrine. The word of God also says in 2nd Corinthians 13:1 that out of the mouth of two or three witnesses let everything be established. In other words, you cannot make a valid statement of faith based only upon one scripture. You need two, or more scriptures to support your point of view, and establish a sound biblical doctrine. Also there must be no direct contradiction with the rest of the Bible. So secondly let’s look at Philippians 4:13 which says, " I can do ALL things THROUGH Christ which strengthens me. " The same procedure may also be applied to this scripture that we just did in Mark 9:23, because most assuredly it is the WILL of Almighty God for us to stop sinning. Here is what we have when we put the phrase “live my life free from sin” in place of the phrase “all things”, “ I can live my life free from sin THROUGH Christ which strengthens me ”. The word “Christ” here simply means anointed. So when we see Jesus Christ, or Christ Jesus written in the Bible it would be helpful for us to translate the word “Christ” in our minds as “anointed”, or “the anointed one”. Hence, Jesus Christ would be, Jesus the anointed , and Christ Jesus would be, the anointed one Jesus. It now becomes apparently clear to us that it is the ANOINTING of God that strengthens us and enables us to live our lives free from sin, just as the ANOINTING of Almighty God strengthened and empower his Son Jesus to live without sin and do the mighty works of healing the he did. I will explain this a little further on in the study. Keep this in mind as we now read from the third witness found in Mark 10:26,27, which says, " Who then can be saved? And Jesus looking upon them says, With men it is impossible, BUT NOT WITH God: for WITH God ALL things ARE possible. " The word “saved” here is SOZO in the Greek, and means to save, to deliver, to protect, to heal, to preserve, to be made whole, and to be placed back into right relationship with Almighty God. So let’s use the definition delivered in place of saved and read Mark 10:26 a second time. “Who then can be delivered from a life of sin?” Jesus answers in verse 27 and I again paraphrase, “ With natural human strength it is impossible, but NOT WITH God’s ANOINTING: for WITH God’s anointing of the Holy Spirit, then living your life totally free from sin IS possible. ” Now that we have looked at three witnesses, that is to say, three different scriptures, that clearly show that it IS POSSIBLE to live our lives totally free from any and all sin, all that is left to do is to determine whether or not it is God’s WILL for us NOT to sin or to stop sinning. Let’s begin with 1st John 3:8 that reads, “ He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might DESTROY the works of the devil . " It is crystal clear from this scripture as well as many other scriptures that sin is one of the works of the devil. And it was for this VERY purpose that Jesus came into the world as the Son of man to destroy sin. The word “destroy” here means to ruin completely so that restoration is impossible. In other words Jesus came to totally eradicate sin from our lives, even to the point that it would be impossible for sin to creep back into our lives. The word destroy also means to do away with, get rid of, to put an END to, render useless, to defeat completely. In other words, Jesus came to do away with, get rid of, and put an end to sin in our lives so that the restoration thereof would be impossible. Let me say this yet another way, Jesus came to put an END to sin in our lives, to set us completely free from sin. The Bible clearly tells us in Romans 6:14 that sin SHALL NOT have dominion over us . Satan is no longer our god. The blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ our Lord, has DESTROYED every last bit of rule or dominating influence that he once had over us. Satan may still be the god of this world, but praise be to God, Satan no longer has dominion over us as believers, because the GREATER one lives within us, speaking of the Holy Spirit of Almighty God. Here is what 1 John 4:4 has to say about the GREATER one living IN us as believers. “ Greater is he (speaking of the Holy Spirit of Almighty God) that is IN me than he (referring to Satan as the god of this world) that is in the world”. Now go to 1st John 5:1 that tells us, “ Whosoever believes that Jesus is the CHRIST (or more specifically whosoever BELIEVES that Jesus is the ANOINTED one of Almighty God) is born of God.” For a deeper understanding of the vital importance of seeing and BELIEVING that Jesus was ANOINTED with the Holy Spirit of Almighty God and this is HOW Jesus did the works that he did INCLUDING living his life WITHOUT SIN, then please read the study called "JESUS THE CHRIST" , which remember CHRIST means the ANOINTED ONE of Almighty God. But for now I would like you to skip down to verse 4 and 5 where we see that whosoever is BORN of God WILL OVERCOME the world BY OUR FAITH. “For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and THIS is the victory that overcomes the world, even OUR FAITH. Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” Remember that the Bible teaches us that Satan is the god of this world, so therefore if you are BORN of God, that is to say, if you are a born again believer in Jesus Christ, then that makes you an over comer of Satan, and therefore an over comer of sin as well. Satan is under YOUR feet if so be you are a BELIEVER in Jesus Christ. You have been given all AUTHORITY and power over the enemy in the NAME of Jesus, so start standing in your authority and begin resisting the devil called Satan in the mighty NAME of Jesus you Lord and savior. The word of God says in James 4:7 to “ RESIST the devil and he will flee from you.” Resist the temptation to sin and the temptation will flee from you. This is a written guarantee from Almighty God who cannot lie. I want you to consider this next statement very carefully, because this is what the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart when I cried out to God to help me over come this sin in my life that I kept falling back into over and over. The Holy Spirit asked me the question, "Have you ever successfully resist even ONE temptation in you life that you did NOT give into and sin?" I said back to God, of course I have many times, but I just cannot over come this one particular sin no matter how hard I try. Then the Holy Spirit said back to me, if you have successfully resisted the temptation to sin, any temptation whatsoever, no matter how big or how small, even just one time in your life, even if you gave into this same temptation at a latter time, then I want you to know that you are able to resist any and all temptations at all times in your life. So then, I am here to ASSURE you that YES it IS POSSIBLE for YOU to live YOUR life totally free from ALL sin simply by resisting sin one temptation at a time. Jesus said don’t take thought for tomorrow for sufficient is today. In other words don’t worry about the temptations that may or may not come down the road, but deal only with the one you are faced with at the present time. KNOW that all the authority of Almighty God is BEHIND you ENFORCE what you command in the name of Jesus. KNOW that God is FAITHFUL to perform his word, therefore if you RESIST the temptation to sin, then the temptation WILL leave you if you hold fast and refuse to give into it. The Bible ASSURES us in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that “ God will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able,(able to what? Able to resist and overcome) but will with the temptation make a way of escape, that you are able to bear it . ” So then if you say, like I used to say myself, that the temptation that you are faced with is too great and that you just can’t resist it, then you are being deceived just like I was deceived by this same lie from the devil before that Holy Spirit assured me that I could overcome any and all temptations in my life. In other words, in essence you are calling God a liar, when you say that you are NOT ABLE to over come the temptations that come your way. You may have not realized it before, but your are in doubt and unbelief, and everything that is not of faith is sin. Now I know that this is not your intention, but that is, in fact, what you are doing when you give into the temptation to sin. You are not submitting yourself unto God, but rather unto man. The carnal man, our fleshly nature, that says we are only human and subject to failure, but God says be ye Holy for I am Holy. Let God be true and every man a liar. Look at 1st Peter 4:1, “ For as much then as Christ (the ANOINTED one) has suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the SAME mind for he that suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin . ” Think about that for a moment. As long as you are resisting the temptation to sin, and you are NOT yielding to temptation, that is to say, you are NOT giving into the temptation, but rather SUFFERING through the temptation, then you are NOT sinning. In other words, while, during, or at the t ime, you are suffering the temptation you have ceased from sin. You see, the temptation is NOT sin. It is when you yield to the temptation that it becomes sin. Think about that the next time that you are being tempted. It is a time of suffering, but God is WITH you to strengthen you, IF so be that the Holy Spirit of Almighty God DWELLS IN you, so resist the devil and do not give into sin and the temptation WILL FLEE from you. You have God's word on it! Remember that 1st John 3:8 says, that if WE commit sin, then WE, who are true born again believers are OF the devil while we are COMMITTING SIN. Romans 6:16 says it like this, "Know you not, that to whom you yield yourself to obey, his servants you are to whom you obey, whether of sin unto death or of obedience to righteousness?" It all comes down to a choice. It is that simple! Are you going to yield yourself to what tempts you, or are you going to obey the word of God and live your life free from sin? One definition of yield means to give up, to surrender, to be overcome. Therefore when you give into sin, in reality, you are being over come by the enemy, Satan. Now it is definitely not God’s WILL for you to be over come by the Devil. The word of God says in Romans 8:31, "If God be for us who can be against us?" I want you to KNOW my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord that the Devil cannot succeed against you,IF you BELIEVE, because Almighty God himself is for you. It is your choice! Resist the temptation of the devil! And the temptation WILL flee from you. Look at Romans 8:9,12 for a moment. "But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, IF so be that the Spirit of God dwell IN you." Now skip to verse 12. "THEREFORE (or for this reason) brethren we are debtors NOT to the flesh to live after the flesh" Notice that this scripture says that we indeed ARE debtors, but we are NOT debtors to the FLESH. In other words, we have been set FREE from sin and now have become SERVANTS or DEBTORS of RIGHTEOUSNESS. Let’s look at this scripture from some other translations. The Living Bible says it this way, "So dear brothers you have NO obligation whatever to your sinful nature to do what it begs you to do." Are you seeing it yet? It is your choice! You are under no obligation to sin. The New English Version reads, "It follows, my friends, that our LOWER nature (the flesh) has no claim upon us; we are NOT obligated to live on that level.” Our flesh is our lower nature, and our spirits, which are born of God, ought to be ruling and reigning over our flesh. This is where we are debtors. God is not going to make your spirit take dominion over your flesh. This is something YOU yourself are going to have to do with the HELP of the Holy Spirit. And the ONLY way that you are going to be able to overcome sin consistently is through FAITH. Living free from sin will not be possible for you until you first BELIEVE that WITH God's HELP, then living free from sin will be possible. Verse 13 goes on to say, "For if you (speaking to true born again believers in Jesus Christ, if YOU) live after the flesh, you shall DIE, but if YOU (speaking of YOU yourself) THROUGH the Spirit do mortify (crucify or put to death) the deeds of the body, you shall live." This is a serious matter that is not to be taken lightly . Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is DEATH. We need to wake up to the fact that when we are being tempted that it is a LIFE and DEATH decision that we are making. Every time you give into temptation you are literally slipping back into Satan’s dominion and you are running the risk of being forever separated from God and losing the promise of ETERNAL LIFE. I cannot stress this enough my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, if you are living in sin and you were to die while you are living in sin, then you will NOT inherit ETERNAL LIFE in the world to come. God’s word clearly declares in the book of Deuteronomy 30:19, "I have SET before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore CHOOSE life, that you and your seed may live." Again I say unto you, it is your choice. Choose life. You can live a sin free life, IF you yourself CHOOSE to do so.But first you must BELIEVE that it IS possible, because the JUST, those who have been brought back into right relationship with God by the blood of Jesus, shall LIVE BY FAITH. Now let’s look at 2nd Peter 1:10, which is my favorite scripture dealing with living a life free from sin. The last portion of this verse says, "For IF you do these things you shall NEVER fall." The word “never” here in the Greek means not at all, anymore, by no means, in no case, in any wise, at any time, never. And the word “fall” here in the Greek means to trip, that is to err, to sin, to fail of salvation, to offend, stumble, fall. So then, if words mean anything at all, then this verse of scripture is literally saying, and I paraphrase, “For IF YOU DO THESE THINGS YOU SHALL NEVER, by NO MEANS, in NO CASE, in ANY WAY, at ANY TIME SIN, NO, NOT AT ALL, ANY MORE, NEVER AGAIN, ERR or FAIL of SALVATION, STUMBLE, FALL, or OFFEND in ANY MANNER!"

marital Breakthrough

After you accept God’s will, you must be positioned to meet his will. Even if Rebecca knew in her mind that she was open to God’s choice, only been at the well positioned her to meet the man who connected her to her man. Are you well positioned? You can pray, “Dear Lord, position me for your divine connection to my man/woman”. When you pray this prayer, if God is telling you to relocate or travel or visit someone; please do. I have a sister who met her husband when she listened to the leading of the Holy Spirit to visit a sister in her church. During that visit she met the sister’s husband and they engaged in a discussion. The sister’s husband casually suggested she would be a good match for another brother in their church. Of course the sister she went to visit waived it off for flimsy reasons but today my sister is happily married to that brother. There has been instances where all above comes together neatly yet the man refuse to speak or the woman refuse to answer. Ojuboro ko ni afii gba omo l’owo ekuro (it is not an easy task to collect seed from the palm kernel). You need to pray, “God, give me/ him/her voice and verse (words)”. I had many suitors but some couldn’t get the words out; some were only able to verbalise their desires after someone else wooed them! I said wooed them because it felt like they were in a trance from which they only woke up after being married to someone else. If I was willing to take them, they were willing to marry me after they woke up! Until God spoke the words, “Let there be...”, everything that was meant to be hung in nothingness. At times the man or woman is around you but fear, family, familiarity, frivolities etc forestall him/her from speaking/answering. A guy talked about how an old woman would always appear in his dream each time he decided to ask a lady to marry him and once he sees the old woman, he will walk away without telling the lady why he lost interest. Brethren, spiritual things must be dealt with spiritually. You may need to go for a deliverance, you may need to withdraw to a mountain, you may need to fast and pray; who you marry determines a lot; so be focused. Finally you must pray, “God! Let time and season work to create my marriage”. At times the man wants to settle into marriage but he loses his job and doesn’t have enough faith to carry on with the plan. It happened to me. When we met, he had a job but he lost it and insisted that we couldn’t go to the next level until he found another. It took God to convince him that this was the lie of the devil; with or without a job God can build a home. I had to serve my faith for two and challenged him to dine; “Fix a date and see if God will not go beyond giving you a job”. He did and God went the extra mile for us. There was a man who lost his mother few weeks to his wedding; the season was not going to favour him as the grief was driving him to cancel his wedding. But my mother stepped in and prayerfully guided him to go ahead with the registry part of the wedding. The other parts of the wedding that were cancelled were never done but they have remained married and happy because God turned things round because they listened to the voice of wisdom. The one who is dead has finished her race; the living has the task of continuing the race. It may sound harsh but it is real. I have a sister in the Lord whose marriage was nose diving. As part of the spiritual and medical treatment, herself and husband were to pray and have sex at particular times, the last day of their pray and sex fell on the night when they arrived at the village for her father’s burial. Of course her husband said, “But we can’t possibly have sex when you are mourning”, the sister said, “Even if we have to do it in the bush, we have to do it”. I don’t know where they did it, but they did it and that night the seed of their first child was sown. Today that woman who was called barren and almost buried her marriage in the grief of her father’s death has children to share the loving memory of her father. All through your focus for marital breakthrough, you have to be in sync with the Holy Spirit; you must be sensitive. Wear what your Spirit says to wear, go where your Spirit leads and do what your Spirit directs even if it appears stupid. But be sure what you are interacting with is the Holy Spirit. I recollect that after I met Temi, though I caught him glancing a couple of times, I kind of felt he treated me more like his sister especially with the years between us. But if we were to be married, I didn't want to be treated as a sister, I wanted to be his wife. I prayed and the Holy Spirit said dress like a woman; a wife. Well maybe I interpreted it humanly but I decided to go the extra mile in my dressing and make up the next morning. Brethren, the look he gave me when I walked into him was dramatically different; it wasn't the kind of look you'd give a sister, it was a look for a sweetheart! He verbalised it by making an endearing comment and he sealed it by pulling me into a hug. I got what I wanted! But I had to start praying for the handshake not to pass the elbow... Except your mate wants his/her gender, be an attractive opposite! You must learn to pray in a focused manner about accepting God's choice for you and that everything God has created will work to usher in your new home. When the time for settling into marriage comes, remain focused on the goal which is marriage. Your goal is is not to be a great girl friend/boy friend or excellent fiancee/fiance, your goal is to be a wife/ husband. Don't get carried away by the dates, happy hours and ceremonies! Be wary of drawbacks; they have become devil’s tools for cracking the foundation. They include distractions and arguments about the type of marriage, venue, aso-ebi, who to visit, who to invite, colour code etc. Big or small, marriage is between two people. My husband and I had 4 joinings! The first, after he met my parents, was on the Altar of God before my Pastor and his wife ONLY. Even if we did not have other ceremonies, as long as God was there, it is signed and sealed in heaven. It is essential to follow the law of the land but don’t sign yourself out by making outrageous demands before you sign yourself in. Remember that all what you want will not work except it is wrapped in God's will. Find time to read other posts on Divine Connection and feel free to request counsel. I look forward to celebrating your marital breakthrough.

Discipleship:

Introduction I find that I am always prone to overestimate the benefits of things I desire and to underestimate the price involved. My wife and I recently committed ourselves to a ‘small’ remodeling project. Any of you who have done the same know that it has become a far bigger commitment than we anticipated. This is also a danger in the matter of discipleship. Repeatedly, our Lord cooled the enthusiasm of eager candidates for discipleship by urging them to consider its cost. 216 In evangelical circles today, there seems to be a trend in the opposite direction. We urge people to be saved and to become disciples of our Lord, highlighting its benefits and blessings. We conceal the true cost of discipleship and any liabilities in the fine print, if we mention them at all. 217 If we truly desire to be followers of our Lord along the path of discipleship, it is imperative that we first heed the words of our Lord and count the cost of discipleship. Lest we become falsely discouraged or disillusioned, we should also weigh these costs against the benefits of being a follower of Jesus. In this way only can we make an intelligent decision in this decisive matter of discipleship. The Requirements of Discipleship In the gospel of Luke, we find the requirements of discipleship outlined by our Lord. “Now great multitudes were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him, saying ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and take counsel whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks terms for peace. So therefore, no one of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions” ( Luke 14:25-33). From one perspective, discipleship centers upon the issue of dependence and submission. Taken from another direction, we might say that discipleship entails a complete rearrangement of our priorities. To be a disciple of our Lord demands that He become the most important thing in our life. This is what Luke sought to remind us of when he recorded the words of our Lord in the fourteenth chapter of his gospel. Consider with me the rearrangement of our priorities demanded by discipleship. (1) The disciple of Jesus Christ must put his Master above those nearest and dearest to him. “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, … he cannot be my disciple” ( Luke 14:26). We should all understand that Jesus did not mean by this that we cannot love God and family at the same time—that we can only love God while hating those nearest and dearest to us. 218 The Scriptures speak too plainly elsewhere of our obligations to our families, husbands, wives and children. What our Lord means is that our love for Him must have precedence over any other. Our attachment to Him must be greater than any other. While husbands are to love their wives ( Ephesians 5:25), they are to love the Savior more. No human relationship should be more intimate, no human bond more inseparable than that between the disciple and his Master. We in America can hardly grasp the potential threat that family ties pose to true discipleship. In the days of the New Testament as well as down through church history, individuals have been confronted with the ultimatum to choose either Jesus or family, but not both. Many Christians have been totally disowned and disinherited because of their faith in Christ, the Savior. Several years ago when I was teaching school, I had a little Jewish girl as a student. More than anything else in the world she dreaded telling her parents of her new faith. She was a handicapped child and to be put out by her family would seemingly be disastrous. Not only is our relationship to Christ to have priority over family ties, our union with Him is to have precedence over all human relationship. Friendship (or identification) with Christ will inevitably result in enmity with the world. “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore, the world hates you” ( John 15:18-19). The disciple of Christ may not desire persecution, but he can depend on it. “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. It is enough for the disciple that he become as his teacher, and the slave as his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household!” ( Matthew 10:24-25). (2) The disciple of the Lord Jesus must value following Jesus Christ above life itself. The basic instinct to preserve life is inherent in all of creation. Discipleship demands a devotion to the Lord Jesus that surpasses the instinct to preserve our own life. The history of the church sufficiently proves that this requirement has resulted in the death of countless Christians through the centuries. Once again, we Americans can scarcely comprehend the demands of discipleship as faced by many of our persecuted and oppressed brethren. Perhaps even in our own lifetime conditions in our nation may become such that we will come to appreciate the significance of this requirement of devotion to Christ above life itself. (3) The disciple of Jesus Christ must place his commitment to Christ above material possessions. I have the distinct impression that we are now beginning to arrive at the real crunch for those of us who are complacent, affluent, American Christians. “So therefore, no one of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions” ( Luke 14:33). Simply put, we must love God more than we love money and what it can buy. The story of the rich young ruler illustrates this requirement of discipleship. He wanted to be a disciple of our Lord (and therefore obtain the fringe benefit of eternal life), but not at the cost of his material possessions. I do not think that the Bible teaches that one can become a Christian only after disposing of his material assets. It is the attitude behind our affluence that is the crucial factor. Oftentimes the poor are more materialistic than the rich, for they assign too much importance to material things. The desire to have money and material goods is what is sinful. In biblical terms, “The love of money (not the possession of it) is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang” ( 1 Timothy 6:10). Paul instructed those who were rich in material things to be rich in good works, and not to trust in the uncertainty of riches ( 1 Timothy 6:17-19). That is the point. Nothing must compete with our devotion to and our dependence upon the Lord Jesus. (4) The disciple of Jesus Christ must daily die to self-interest. Even as our Lord spoke of His destiny leading Him to a cross, so also every true disciple must also bear a cross. “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be my disciple” ( Luke 14:27). Our cross must not be confused with the cross of our Lord. His was a cross borne once for all, while ours must be taken up daily. “And He was saying to them all, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” ( Luke 9:23). His cross was the instrument which put to death the sinless Son of God. Taking up our cross involves the daily putting to death of the selfish desires and ambitions of the old self, our lower nature (cf. Romans 6:1-14; 1 Corinthians 15:31; 2 Corinthians 4:7-12; Colossians 2:20; 3:11). There is a “Christian” song which is nicely done, but its theology makes me cringe. The words go something like this (be grateful I don’t attempt to sing it): Must Jesus bear the cross alone

The words go something like this (be grateful I don’t attempt to sing it): Must Jesus bear the cross alone

stud of Elijah life

One of the most important things the Lord has ever spoken to me is taken from a passage of Scripture involving Elijah the prophet. Once I saw what it was really saying, it linked many other truths together and made a big impact on my life. This is so simple that once you see it, you’re going to wonder how you never saw it before. Here’s what it says in 1 Kings 17:2-4: And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, [3] Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. [4] And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. Elijah’s provision wasn’t where he was; it was where God told him to go! This is profound! Some of you have an impression from God to do something. Maybe you’re supposed to start a new business, make a job change, move to another town, go to Bible college, speak to a person, etc. You want to do it, but you’re holding back because the provision isn’t there yet. You’re saying, “God, I can’t do what You’re asking without first seeing the provision. How do I know all these things are going work out” This principle in 1 Kings applies directly to your situation. God is sending the provision for your needs not to where you are but to where He told you to go! The question is, “Are you all ‘there’” Some of you aren’t experiencing supernatural provision because you aren’t “there.” There is a place called “there” for you. In verse 4, God said, “I have commanded the ravens,” (emphasis mine), meaning He had already spoken to these ravens and they were on their way to where Elijah was supposed to go. First Kings 17:5 says, So [Elijah] went and did according unto the word of the Lord: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. (Brackets mine) In other words, if Elijah had stayed where he was, he could have prayed and fasted, saying, “God, why haven’t You supplied my needs” But he wouldn’t have seen God’s provision if he hadn’t gone where God instructed. One of the reasons we aren’t seeing a greater provision from God financially, emotionally, or in our circumstances is because we aren’t doing what God told us to do. We’ve got a word from God that we haven’t acted on. We’re somewhere other than where He told us to be. Now, this is an important point because I preach on the grace of God a lot. I talk about how God’s grace is how He provides things and that it’s not based on our obedience or holiness. God loves us independent of our performance—that’s absolutely true! But does this mean obeying Him is unimportant Just the opposite. I believe God has a plan for my life and that He chose me from my mother’s womb and ordained me to be a prophet and to minister. I believe He has great things planned for me, things earmarked for me that have my name on them. But if I hadn’t obeyed, stepped out, and done what He told me to do, God still would have provided, but I would have missed out on it. I had to go “there.” I don’t believe God just makes things come to pass; it takes cooperation on our part. This isn’t intended to hurt or condemn anyone, because I know that some of you are thinking, Maybe that’s why things aren’t working in my life—I haven’t been obedient to what God told me to do! Well… that’s absolutely correct! It’s not that God won’t bless you because you haven’t obeyed Him; it’s that His blessing is over “there”! If the reason you won’t step out is because you’ve got some form of “security” but you’re miserable and things are just going wrong, I encourage you to do what God told you to do. I played football in high school, and what I’m talking about is similar to how a quarterback throws a football to a wide receiver. A quarterback doesn’t throw the ball to where the receiver is; he throws it to where the receiver should be. If he doesn’t do that, he’ll miss the receiver. Likewise, God is meeting all of your needs—He’s sending His supply to where He told you to be. Another great example of this is with our prospective Bible college students. The Lord gives them a word and tells them to come to Bible college, but they struggle with it because they’ve got good paying jobs, nice houses, families, and friends they don’t want to leave. The security of those things keeps them from taking a step of faith because they don’t see how God is going to provide. But I’ve seen what I’m sharing inspire hundreds of people. And when they get to their place called “there,” they find themselves with better jobs and better houses, and things work out. Their entire lives change. And there would have been no way to anticipate this before they took that step of faith. I’m telling you, when you get out of doubt and into your place called “there,” when you start doing what God called you to do, there is supernatural provision. This is one of the great lessons from the life of Elijah. Let’s look at 1 Kings 17:6: And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook. As I mentioned before, I believe that since God had already commanded the ravens, if Elijah hadn’t obeyed, God would still have been faithful to send the provision where He told him to go. I believe that these ravens would have brought bread and meat every morning and evening but that it all would have piled up beside the brook and gone to waste. Elijah could have starved to death even though God had been faithful to provide for his needs. Here’s something else to consider: How did Elijah know which spot along the brook Cherith to go If the brook was ten miles long, he could have been five or ten miles away from where the ravens were bringing him food. The ravens could fly faster than Elijah could walk or run. I’m convinced that one of the ways he knew he was at the right spot was because the ravens were already “there” with the bread and meat. When Elijah saw the provision God had promised, that was one of the signs that he was in the right place. The same will be true of you when you step out. You have to take a step of faith with no guarantees that things are going to work. And then you will start seeing the provision of the Lord. It’ll be confirmation that you’re going in the right direction and doing what He told you to do. You’ll be able to say, “It was God who told me to do this.” This is how it’s worked in my life. I haven’t seen God’s provision accidentally. I’ve applied what 1 Kings 17 is talking about and taken steps of faith to get where I am. And I’m going to keep taking steps of faith. All you have to do to get started is take a step of faith. There is a place called “there” for you. It’s not necessarily a location; you may not have to change where you live. It could just be an attitude change or decision you need to make. But when you take a step of faith and start following what God tells you to do, there is a supernatural flow of provision— not only of finances but also of peace, joy, blessing, anointing, influence, power, and authority—that you cannot duplicate with all your human effort. All of these kinds of things follow obeying the word of the Lord. You can look at the life of Elijah; he was a nobody before he had a word from God and acted on it. But then—boom—after he stepped out in faith, he became the dominant figure in the nation. He was blessed, miracles began to happen, a person was raised from the dead, and a revival broke out. You’ve got to find your place called “there” and then get there! It’s imperative. I tell you, this could change your life if you would act on it.

The. life of a New Creature

"Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things are passed away; behold, new things have come." (2 Corinthians 5:17). Most of us like things that are new, especially useful things. We like new cars, houses, clothes and so forth. The word "new" is used many times in the New Testament to describe various aspects of the gospel. We read of the new covenant, the new man, the new commandment, the new and living way and the new heavens and new earth. It is good news that the gospel shows us how to have "a new beginning". Jesus called it being "born again" (John 3:1-5). When we are born again, we become God's "new creations". In this we come to possess several things as a result of God's grace. We Have a New Position "Therefore if any man is in Christ..." The phrase "in Christ" contrasts with what we were before our faith came and did its work. Our old position was "without Christ" People of earth are very different in numerous ways. We are male and female, red, yellow, black and white. We are rich and poor, tall and short, and we speak different languages and have different customs. But these are not our greatest differences. These differences will all cease to be factors at all in eternity. But the greatest difference will still matter; some of us are "in Christ" and some of us are not. Before becoming Christians we were without Christ, God and hope (Ephesians 2:12,13; cf. vss 1-3). But now those who have obeyed the gospel are "in Christ". and therefore in a state of having received God's grace. The "old man" of sin has been discarded, crucified, and buried (Ephesians 4:22-24; Galatians 2:20; Romans 6:3,4; Colossians 2:12). In his place, a "new man" has risen. This happened when we by faith obeyed the gospel in baptism. It did not happen before that moment (Galatians 3:26,27 and the previously cited passages). Jesus Christ then came to live in us and through us as our Savior, Example, Guide, Master and Helper. God wants everybody to have this new position "in Christ" and therefore has opened the door for everyone. Paul describes our redemption in Ephesians 2:4-10 and uses the term "in Christ" many times in his inspired writings. If our position when we leave this world is "in Christ", then our eternal state will be "with Christ", an eternal state of glory (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18). We Have a New Character "...he is a new creature..." One who becomes a "new creature" is not "new" in the sense of time, but in the sense of quality. He/she is of a different character than the old person. Also, the word "creature" suggests a divine creation. Even as God created Adam and Eve, it is He who creates "new creatures" from old sinners. But God does no forming "from the dust of the ground" in the new creatures He makes. Rather, the Lord accomplishes a change of state. "Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation." (2 Corinthians 5:18,19). Like God's first human creatures, Adam and Eve, God's "new creatures" are created in perfect fellowship with God. They are created in His image and are created to do His will (Colossians 3:9,10; Ephesians 2:10). Lots of things are made new when all this happens. We receive a new life; we live by a new standard; we have a new purpose; we have a new perspective; are called by a new name and look forward to a new home. We Have a New Life "...the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come..." The old man loved sin and sinning. He ignored the consequences of sin; at least the consequences that could be ignored. He also thought little about his soul and his spiritual needs. But the new man's attitude toward sin is different. He hates it, and the hatred ought to grow. Sin has lost much of its allure, and only in times of forgetfulness or carelessness does it effect him as it once did (1 John 3:6-9). Sometimes the old man would mock the gospel and spiritual things (1 Corinthians 1:18). But the new man realizes how important these things are (Romans 1:16; Hebrews 4:12). It is his hope and confidence. It has become his own story as he lives to be identified as a faithful disciple of Jesus. The old man had disregarded his need for salvation; but the new man wants salvation not only for himself, but also for others. This love for others reflects Christ's own love for us (John 13:35). The old man had a very distorted picture of himself, life and the future. His plans therefore were inadequate because they provided nothing but defeat in eternity. But the new man places his priorities on spiritual things which enhances his life and relationships here and provides him with a certain hope in eternity (Colossians 3:1). A new beginning in Christ. You've begun life at least once. If you have never done so, it is time to begin again. If you have already made a new beginning, live your new life with the new focus which comes to light in the gospel.

Art of Genuine worship

Gen. 22:1-14 QUALITIES OF GENUINE WORSHIP Intro: Ill. principle of “The Law Of First Mention”. (Ill. Satan, Gen. 3; Egypt, Gen 12.) First mention of the word “worship”, v. 5, in the Bible. This passage sets the standard for what genuine worship is all about. The word “worship” means, “reverence or devotion for a deity”. It comes from Anglo-Saxon word “weorthscipe”, meaning “worth ship”. Means “ascribing worth to a person or object.” When we “worship” God, we are saying “God is worthy of all my love, my attention and my devotion. He is worthy to receive all that I can give Him.” The word translated “worship” in verse 5 comes from a Hebrew word that means “to bow down, to prostrate oneself”. In the New Testament, “worship” comes from a word that means “to kiss the hand in a token of reverence”. It was used to refer to “a dog licking his master’s hand”. It is an image of absolute love and complete trust and devotion. Ill. People have some strange ideas about worship. Something that can only be done in church. Going to a church and sitting quietly while religious exercises are conducted. A time of singing, preaching, testifying and shouting. Ill. “We really worshiped Sunday! Why, our preacher didn’t even get to preach!” Did genuine worship take place? Ill. “Our service Sunday was so sublime. The minister’s words were so touching, everyone left the service uplifted and encouraged.” Was that genuine worship? In these verses, we are allowed to see genuine worship fleshed out. In this terrible time of testing, Abraham shows us what worship truly is. I want to examine these verses and preach about the Qualities Of Genuine Worship. I. v. 3 GENUINE WORSHIP IS SUBMISSIVE · Ill. The context – God’s command was hard, hard and unbelievable. Yet, it was absolutely clear! God said “Go, worship and sacrifice your son.” Abraham did not hesitate; he did as he was commanded! Ill. He did not seek excuses, he got up early and he went, v. 3. · A true heart for God is marked by obedience, John 14:15, 14:21. Nothing says that we are His and that we love Him by doing what He tells us to do, 1 John 3:22-24; 5:2-3. · Worship is not only something a person does; worship is what we are! Every obedient moment of our lives is an act of worship. (Ill. Attendance, tithing, witnessing, praying, studying the Bible, praise, etc.) II. v. 2 GENUINE WORSHIP IS STEADFAST · Abraham’s life is marked by worship. Ill. His altars and his worship. In fact, Abraham had just finished a time of worship at Beersheba, Gen. 21:33. He was enjoying a time of blessing and prosperity and he worshiped God. He worshiped the Lord when times were good. In this passage, things take a turn for the worse. God and His ways are not making sense, but Abraham still worships Him! · Ill. Easy to worship God when things are good. Not so easy when hard times come! Genuine worship looks beyond the crisis of the hour and sees a God Who is worthy of worship regardless of how life is going. Genuine worship sees a God Who is in control of all the situations of life and it bends the knee to Him. Ill. Rom. 8:28; Psa. 37:23; 2 Cor. 12:7-11. Ill. Far too many people are looking for an excuse not to worship. Genuine worship sees the hand of God in all of life and loves Him through the good and the bad. III. v. 5 GENUINE WORSHIP IS SEPARATED · When they arrived at the mountain, Abraham separated himself from every worldly care and went to worship. Abraham came ready to worship and he let others take care of worldly matter. · Genuine worship shuts the world out and separates itself unto the Lord. Too often our worship is contaminated and controlled by the world. Genuine worship should be the first priority of our lives. We should do nothing else until we have worshiped Him! (Ill. Jesus – Mark 1:35; 6:46; John 6:15) (Ill. Psa. 5:3) (Ill. I am too busy not to pray!) · Ill. Worldly concerns contaminate our public worship too. Church is not the place to catch up on gossip; do your nails; figure your checkbook; show off your clothes; fix your hair; talk to your neighbor; look for fault; cause trouble, etc. when we enter this place we should come for the sole purpose of worship! IV. v. 5-10 GENUINE WORSHIP IS SACRIFICIAL · This worship was going to cost Abraham very dearly. He was called to give up the Son of Promise, Isaac. Notice how God makes the demand, v. 2. Ill. Abraham’s response – He never waivers! He gathers what he needs and he goes to do what the Lord has asked of him. He is willing to sacrifice everything he has and everything he has been promised at the command of God. He holds nothing back! · Genuine worship is costly because it requires us to make sacrifices. Things like time, plans, pride (Ill. Sarah – Would she have understood?), pleasures, secret sins, etc will all have to be taken to the mountain and placed on the altar. That is why so few genuinely worship. It is not cheap! (Ill. All some will give is the cheap variety. They get what they pay for!) · Genuine worship requires that everything of value be placed on the altar and given to God, Ill. John 4:23-24; Rom. 12:1-2. V. v. 5 GENUINE WORSHIP IS SECURE · Abraham did not know all that was going to happen, but he went up that mountain expecting a miracle, and that is just what he received. (Ill. Heb. 11:17-19) He knew that his worship would not be in vain! · Genuine worship does not understand all of life. It is not pleased with every twist in the road. Genuine worship gives itself unreservedly to God, in spite of the things it cannot comprehend, and it bows before Him in the face of everything. Genuine worship knows that its earthly expression is merely practice for what will be perfected in Heaven. · Genuine worship bows before God because it realizes Who God is, what God has done and where the road of faith will end up. Genuine worship knows that the real miracle is that it is allowed to worship in the first place! Conc: What made all this possible was Abraham’s availability, v. 1. He was in his place, listening for the voice of the Lord and he was ready for worship. God is seeking genuine worshipers, John 4:23. Is your worship genuine; or does it need work?

Becoming like Jesus

Becoming Like Jesus Scripture Reading: Romans 8:26-31 Scripture Text: Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Romans 8:29 [Living] For from the very beginning God decided that those who came to him--and all along he knew who would--should become like his Son, so that his Son would be the First, with many brothers. Introduction: We find, in many places in the Scriptures, that believers are to endeavor to become as much like Christ as they possibly can. For instance..... 1 John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. Col. 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Col. 3:10 [Living] You are living a brand new kind of life that is continually learning more and more of what is right, and trying constantly to be more and more like Christ who created this new life within you. 2 Cor. 3:18 [Living] But we Christians have no veil over our faces; we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him. If we are to become like Christ, then it is necessary for us to know what kind of person He is. Let’s see what the Bible has to say about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I. Jesus Was A Man Of Obedience To The Father. John 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. Romans 5:19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Philip. 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Hebrews 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; A. To become like Jesus, we must also be obedient to the will of the Father. 1. Whole heartedly. Deut. 26:16 This day the Lord thy God hath commanded thee to do these statutes and judgments: thou shalt therefore keep and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy soul. 2. We may not always understand the reason, but we must obey. Luke 5:5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. John 2:7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 3. Our obedience proves our love for Christ. John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. II. Jesus Is Filled With Love For Others. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 15:9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. A. Christian love is the evidence of true discipleship. John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. 1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Illustration: Love is Slow to suspect -- quick to trust. Slow to reprimand -- quick to forbear. Slow to belittle -- quick to appreciate. Slow to condemn -- quick to justify. Slow to offend -- quick to defend. Slow to demand -- quick to give. Slow to provoke -- quick to conciliate. Slow to hinder -- quick to help. Slow to resent -- quick to forgive. -- The Baptist Challenge III. Jesus Was Confident In His Faith. John 11:41-42 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. [42] And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. A. We should be confident of our salvation. Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. B. We must be confident of His promises and His power to keep them. Acts 27:25 (Paul)Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me. Romans 4:20 (Abraham) He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 1 John 5:14-15 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: [15] And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. IV. Jesus Sanctified Himself. John 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. John 17:19 [Living]...and I consecrate myself to meet their need for growth in truth and holiness. A. It is the will of God for us. 1 Thes. 4:3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: Ephes. 5:25-26 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; [26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, V. Jesus Was A Man Of Expectation. A. Jesus expected the Father to raise Him from the dead. Do You?? Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 1. The resurrection of the dead is certain. Daniel 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Psalm 49:15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah. John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. 1 Cor. 15:51-55 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, [52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. [53] For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. [54] So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. [55] O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? B. Jesus expected to return to His Father. Do You?? John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. [2] In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. Conclusion: Jesus is coming again for all who have become like Him. Are you ready??

New Creature in Christ

The Believer A New Creature A Sermon (No. 881) Delivered on Sunday Morning, July 18th, 1869, by C. H. SPURGEON, At the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Newington "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature."—2 Corinthians 5:17. HIS TEXT IS exceedingly full of matter, and might require many treatises, and even multitudes of folios, to bring forth all its meaning. Holy Scripture is notably sententious. Human teachers are given to verbiage; we multiply words to express our meaning, but the Lord is wondrously laconic; he writeth as it were in shorthand, and gives us much in little. One single grain of the precious gold of Scripture may be beaten out into acres of human gold leaf, and spread far and wide. A few books are precious as silver, fewer still are golden; but God's Book hath a bank note in every syllable, and the worth of its sentences it were not possible for mortal intellect to calculate. We have two great truths here, which would serve us for the subject of meditation for many a day: the believer's position—he is "in Christ;" and the believer's character—he is a "new creature." Upon both of these we shall speak but briefly this morning, but may God grant that we may find instruction therein. I. First, then, let us consider THE CHRISTIAN'S POSITION—he is said to be "in Christ." There are three stages of the human soul in connection with Christ: the first is without Christ, this is the state of nature; the next is in Christ, this is the state of grace; the third is with Christ, that is the state of glory. Without Christ, this is where we all are born and nurtured, and even though we hear the gospel, and the Bible be in all our houses, and even though we use a form of prayer, yet until we are born again, we are without God, without Christ, and strangers from the commonwealth of Israel. A man may stand at the banqueting-table, and may be without food, unless he puts out his hand to grasp that which is provided; and a man may have Christ preached in his hearing every Sabbath-day, and be without Christ, unless he putteth forth the hand of faith to lay hold upon him. It is a most unhappy condition to be without Christ. It is inconvenient to be without gold, it is miserable to be without health, it is deplorable to be without a friend, it is wretched to be without reputation, but to be without Christ is the worst lack in all the world. O that God would make all of us sensible of it who are now the subjects of it, and may we no longer tarry in the position of being without Christ. The next state is that indicated in the text, "in Christ," of which I will say more by-and-by. "In Christ" leadeth to the third state, which we can never reach without this second one, namely, to be with Christ; to be his companions in the rest which he has attained, all his work and labour done; to be with him in the glory which he has gained, made to see it and to participate in it world without end. To be with Christ is the angels' joy, it is the heaven of heaven, it is the centre of bliss, the sun of paradise. Let us seek after it, and in order that we may have it, let us labour with all our heart and mind to be found in Christ now, that we may be in Christ in the day of his appearing. Turn we now to the expression itself, "in Christ." I never heard of any persons being in any other man but Christ; we may follow certain leaders, political or religious, but we are never said to be included in them. We may take for ourselves eminent examples and high models of humanity, but no man is said in that respect to be in another. But this is a grand old scriptural phrase in which the disciple and the follower of Christ becomes something more than an imitator of his Lord, and is said to be in his Master. We must interpret this scriptural phrase by scriptural symbols. We were all of us in the first Adam. Adam stood for us. Had Adam kept the command, we had all of us been blessed. He took off the forbidden fruit and fell, and all of us fell in him. Original sin falleth upon us because of the transgression of our covenant head and representative, Adam the first; but all believers are in the same sense in Christ, Adam the second, the only other representative Man before God, the heavenly Man, the Lord from heaven. Now, as in Adam we all fell, so all who are in Christ are in Christ perfectly restored. The obedience of Christ is the obedience of all his people; the atonement of Christ is a propitiation for all his people's sins. In Christ we lived on earth, in Christ we died, in Christ we rose, and he "hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places" in himself. As the apostle tells us that Levi was in the loins of Abraham when Melchisedec met him, so were we in the loins of Christ from before the foundation of the world; faith apprehends that blessed truth, and thus by faith we are experimentally in Christ Jesus. Noah's Ark was a type of Christ. The animals that were preserved from the deluge passed through the door into the ark, the Lord shut them in, and high above the foaming billows they floated in perfect safety. We are in Christ in the same sense. He is the ark of God provided against the day of judgment. We by faith believe him to be capable of saving us; we come and trust him, we risk our souls with him, believing that there is no risk; we venture on him confident that it is no venture; giving up every other hope or shadow of a hope, we trust in what Jesus did, is doing, and is in himself, and thus he becomes to us our ark, and we are in him. Another similitude may be taken from the old Jewish law. By God's commands certain cities were provided throughout all Canaan, that an Israelite who should slay his fellow at unawares, might flee there from the avenger of blood. The city of refuge no sooner received the manslayer than he was perfectly free from the avenger who pursued him. Once within the suburbs or through the gate, and the manslayer might breathe safely, the executioner would be kept at bay. In the same sense we are in Christ Jesus. He is God's eternal city of refuge, and we having offended, having slain, as it were, the command of God, flee for our lives and enter within the refuge city, where vengeance cannot reach us, but where we shall be safe world without end. In the New Testament the Lord Jesus explains this phrase of being in himself in another way. He represents us as being in him as the branch is in the vine. Now, the branch derives all its nourishment, its sap, its vitality, its fruit-bearing power, from the stem with which it is united. It would be of no use that the branch should be placed close to the trunk, it would be of no service even to strap it side by side with the stem, it must be actually in it by a vital union. There must be sap-streams flowing at the proper season into it, life-floods gushing into it from the parent stem; and even so there is a mysterious union between Christ and his people, not to be explained but to be enjoyed, not to be defined but to be experienced, in which the very life of Christ flows into us, and we by the virtue that cometh out of him into us, become like unto him, and bring forth clusters of good fruit unto his honour and unto God's glory. I trust you know what this means, beloved, many of you. May you live in the possession of it daily! May you be one with Jesus, knit to him, united to him never to be separated for ever. As the limb is in the body, even so may you constantly be one with Jesus. We may be in Christ also as the stone is in the building. The stone is built into the wall and is a part of it. In some of the old Roman walls you can scarcely tell which is the firmer, the cement or the stone, for their cement was so exceedingly strong, that it held the stones together as though they were one mass of rock; and such is the eternal love which binds the saints to Christ. They become one rock, one palace wall, one temple, to the praise and glory of the God who built the fabric. Thus you see what it is to be in Christ: it is to trust him for salvation as Noah trusted the ark; it is to derive real life from him as the branch does from the stem; it is to lean on him, and to be united to him as the stone leans on the foundation and becomes an integral part of the structure. The phrase "in Christ Jesus," then, has a weight of meaning in it. "How do we come to be there?" saith one. To whom we answer: our union to Christ is practically and experimentally wrought in us by faith when a man giveth himself up to Christ to sink or swim with Christ, when he leaneth his soul wholly on the Beloved, when as for his good works he abhorreth them, and as for his self-righteousness, he counteth it dross and dung, when he clingeth to the sole hope of the cross, then is such a man in Christ. He is further in Christ when he loves Jesus, when the heart having trusted and reposed in the cross, is moved with deep and warm affection to the Crucified, so that the soul clings to Christ, embracing him with fervent love, and Christ becomes the bridegroom, and the heart becomes his spouse, and they are married to one another in a union which no divorce can ever separate. When love and faith come together, then is there a blessedly sweet communion; these two graces become the double channel through which the Holy Spirit's influence flows forth daily, making the Christian to grow up more fully unto Christ Jesus in all things. The riper the Christian becomes, the nearer to the glory, the closer to the perfection which is promised, the more completely will he think and act, and live and move, in Christ his Master, being one with Jesus in all things. I shall not detain you longer over that one matter, every true Christian is in Christ. II. Now we survey THE BELIEVER'S CHARACTER, for it is said that if any man be in Christ he is a "new creature." This is a great utterance. We shall not attempt to dive into it—this were work for a leviathan divine—but merely like the swallow, we touch the surface of it with our wing, and away. What is meant by the Christian being a new creature? Three thoughts seem to me to spring up from the words, and the first is, the believer must then have been the subject of a radical change. He is said to be a new creature, which is of all things a most sweeping change. There are many changes which a man may undergo, but they may be far from being radical enough to be worth calling a new creation. Saul is among the prophets: hear how he prophesies; if they speak with sacred rapture the secrets of God, so doth he. Is not Saul converted—the Scripture tells us that God gave him another heart! Ay, another heart, but not a new heart. A man may be changed from one sin to another, from reckless profanity to mocking formality, from daring sin to hypocritical pretension to virtue; but such a change as is very far from being saving, and not at all like the work which is called a new creation. Ahab went and humbled himself after his murder of Naboth, and God turned away His vengeance for awhile from him, but that temporary humiliation of Ahab was no sign of a renewal of his nature; it was like the changes of the sea, which today is smooth, but which anon will be as ravenous after wrecks as ever, being still unchanged in its nature, still voracious and cruel, fickle and unstable. Ahab may humble himself, but he is Ahab still, and as Ahab will he go down into the pit. Conversion is sometimes described in Scripture as healing; yet the idea of healing does not rise to the radical character of the text. Naaman went down to the Jordan full of leprosy, and he washed himself, and came up, after the seventh immersion, with his flesh clean like unto a little child; but it was the same flesh and the same Naaman, and he was by no means a new creature. The woman, bowed down with infirmity those sad eighteen years, was marvellously changed when she stood upright, as a daughter of Abraham, loosed at last from her bondage; but she was the same woman, and the description does not answer to a new creature. No doubt there are great moral changes wrought in many which are not saving. I have seen a drunkard become sober; I have known persons of debauched habits become regular; and yet their changes have not amounted to regeneration or the new birth. The same sin has been within them, reigning still, though it has assumed a different garb, and used another voice. Ah, ye may be washed from outward leprosies, and ye may be made straight from your visible infirmities, but this will not suffice you; if you are in Christ you must have more than this; for "if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." Nor will the most startling changes suffice unless they are total and deep. The Ethiopian might change his skin, the leopard might suddenly lose his spots— these would be strange prodigies; but the leopard would remain a leopard, and the Ethiop would still be black at heart; the improvement would not amount to new creation. So may a man give up every outward lust and every crying sin which he was wont to indulge, and yet, unless the change shall go far deeper than the outward life, he is not saved—he is not a new creature, and, therefore, he is not in Christ Jesus. I venture to say, that even the metaphor of resurrection, which is often applied to conversion, does not go so far as the language of the text. The young daughter of Jairus is placed upon her bed, and she dies, and our Lord comes and saith to her, "Talitha cumi," and she opens her eyes, she awakes, she lives, she eats," still she is not a new creature; her mother receives her as the selfsame child. Even Lazarus, who has been dead and is supposed through four days of burial to have begun to stink, when he is called from the grave by the voice of Jesus, is the subject of a remarkable miracle, but it scarcely amounts to a new creation. He is the same Lazarus restored, not a new creature, but the same creature vivified from a transient sleep of death. Do you see, then, how very searching the word is here, a "a new creature," absolutely a new creation. It is a root and branch change; not an alteration of the walls only, but of the foundation; not a new figuring of the visible tapestry, but a renewal of the fabric itself. Regeneration is a change of the entire nature from top to bottom in all senses and respects. Such is the new birth, such is it to be in Christ and to be renewed by the Holy Ghost. The text saith that we are new creatures through being in Christ. How comes that about? We have known persons inveigh very earnestly against the doctrine that men are saved by a simple faith in Jesus Christ. That is the gospel, and nothing else is the gospel, and those who do not preach that truth know nothing of God's gospel at all; for it is the very soul and essence of the gospel—the article, as Luther used to say, by which a church stands or falls. We are saved by a simple faith in Jesus, but these people argue against this on the ground that there must be a great moral change in man before he can be reconciled to God and made meet to be with God for ever. But, my brethren, if the text be true, that those who are in Christ are new creatures, what greater change than this can be desired? I know no language, I believe there is none, that can express a greater or more thorough and more radical renewal, than that which is expressed in the term, "a new creature." It is as though the former creature were annihilated and put away, and a something altogether new were formed from the breath of the eternal God, even as in the day when the world sprang out of nothing, and the morning stars sang together over a new-made universe. Such is the fruit of being in Christ, to be a new creature. And what, ye moralists, want ye more than this? What, ye pretenders to perfection, what, ye mystic spiritualists, who strive after a strange holiness to which ye never attain, what, ye that bind heavy burdens upon men's shoulders which ye do not touch with your fingers yourselves, what want ye more than this, for a man to be absolutely made a new creature by being in Christ? How is this done? We reply that the man who is in the first Adam, being translated into the second Adam, becomes legally a new creature. As in the first Adam he is judged and condemned, his punishment is laid upon his substitute; but as viewed in the second representative Man, he is legally, and before the bar of God's justice, a new creature. But this is not all: he who believes in Christ, finding himself completely pardoned as the result of his faith in the precious blood of Jesus, loves Christ, and loves the God who gave Christ to be his redemption, and that love becomes a master passion. We have all heard of the expulsive power of a new affection; this new affection of love to God coming into the soul, expels love to sin. It enters into the heart of man with such a royal majesty about it that it puts down all his predispositions towards evil, and his prejudices against the Most High, and with a real and divine power it reigns within the soul. I suppose the mode of this great change is somewhat after this sort: The man at first is ignorant of his God; he does not know God to be so loving, so kind, so good as he is; therefore the Holy Spirit shows the man Christ, lets him see the love of God in the person of Christ, and thus illuminates the understanding. Whereas the sinner thought nothing of' God before, or his few stray thoughts were all dark and terrible, now he learns the infinite love of God in the person of Christ, and his understanding gets clearer views of God than it ever had before. Then, in turn, the understanding acts upon the affections. Learning God to be thus good and kind, the heart, which was hard towards God, is softened, and the man loves the gracious Father who gave Jesus to redeem him from his sins. The affections being changed, the whole man is on the way towards a great and radical renewal, for now the emotions find another ruler. The passions, once rabid as vultures at the sight of the carrion of sin, now turn with loathing from iniquity, and are only stirred by holy principle. The convert groweth vehement against evil, as vehement as he once was against the right. Now he longeth and pineth after communion with God as once he longed and pined after sin. The affections, like a rudder, have changed the direction of the emotions, and meanwhile the will, that stubbornest thing of all, that iron sinew, is led in a blessed captivity, wearing silken fetters. The heart wills to do what God wills, yea, it wills to be perfect, for to will is present with us, though how to perform all that we would we find not. See then, beloved friends, how great is the change wrought in us by our being in Christ! It is a thorough and entire change, affecting all the parts, powers, and passions of our manhood. Grace doth not reform us, but re- creates us; it doth not pare away here and there an evil excrescence, but it implants a holy and divine principle which goes to instant war with all indwelling sin, and continues to fight until corruption is subdued, and holiness is enthroned. I shall only pause to ask this one question—do my hearers all know what such a change as this means? Believe me, you must know it personally for yourselves, or you can never enter heaven. Let no man deceive you. That regeneration which is said to be wrought in baptism, is a figment without the shadow of foundation. The sprinkling of an infant makes no change in that child whatever; it is, as I believe, a vain ceremony, not commanded of God, nor warranted in Scripture; and as the Church of England practises it, it is altogether pernicious and superstitious, and if there be any effect following it, it must be an evil effect upon those who wickedly lie unto Almighty God, by promising and vowing that the unconscious shall keep God's commandments, and walk in the same all the days of his life; which they cannot do for the child, inasmuch as they cannot even so do for themselves. Ye must have another regeneration than this, the work not of priestly fingers, with their hocus-pocus and superstitious genuflexions, but the work of the Eternal Spirit, who alone can regenerate the soul, whose office alone it is that can give light to the spiritually blinded eye, and sensation to the spiritually dead heart. Be not misled by the priests of this age. Ye profess to have cast off Rome, cast off her Anglican children. Wear not the rags of her superstition, nor bear her mark in your foreheads. Ye must be born again in another sense than formality can work in you. It must be an inward work, a spiritual work, and only this can save your souls. If any man be in Christ Jesus, he is a new creature, that is, he has experienced a radical change. Secondly, another thought starts up from the expression in the text. There is divine working here. "A new creature." Creation is the work of God alone. It must be so. If any doubt it, let us bid them make the effort to create the smallest object. The potter places his clay upon the wheel, and shapes it after his own pleasure, he fashions the vase, but he is not the creator of it. The clay was there beforehand, he does but change its shape. Will any man who thinks he can play the creator, produce a single grain of dust? Call now, and see if there be any that will answer thee—call unto nothingness, and bid a grain of dust appear at thy bidding. It cannot be. Now, inasmuch as Paul declares the Christian man to be a new creature, it is proven that the Christian man is the work of God, and the work of God alone, "Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." The inner life of the Christian is the sole work of the Most High, neither can any pretend to put his finger thereto to help the Creator. In creation, who helped God? who poised the clouds for Him? who weighed the hills in scales to aid His skill, or helped Him dig the channels of the sea? Who aided in rolling the stars along? who took a torch to light up the lamps of heaven? With whom took the Almighty counsel, and who instructed him? If there be any that can stand with God in the making of the world, then may some pretend to compare with Him in the conversion of souls, but until that shall be, the new creation is God's sole domain, and in it His attributes, and His attributes alone, shine resplendent. "It is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy." The sovereign will of God creates men heirs of grace. My brethren, it was more difficult, if such terms are ever applicable to Omnipotence, it was more difficult to create a Christian than to create a world. What was there to begin with when God made the world? There was nothing; but nothing could not stand in God's way—it was at least passive. But, my brethren, in our hearts, while there was nothing that could help God, there was much that could and did oppose Him. Our stubborn wills, our deep prejudices, our ingrained love of iniquity, all these, great God, opposed thee, and aimed at thwarting thy designs. There was darkness in the first creation, but that darkness could not obstruct the incoming of light. "Light be!" was the eternal fiat, and light was. But, O great God, how often has thy voice spoken to us and our darkness has refused thy light! We loved darkness rather than light, because our deeds were evil; and it was only when thou didst put on the garments of thine omnipotence, and come forth in the glory of thy strength, that at the last our soul yielded to thy light, and the abysmal darkness of our natural depravity made way for thy celestial radiance. Yes, great God, it was great to make a world, but greater to create a new creature in Christ Jesus
